Commercial Open Blasting of Marijuana Extractions can Kill You
If you’ve never heard of the term “open blasting,” you’re not alone. This is a method for extracting the psychoactive ingredient THC from marijuana using butane and it’s extremely dangerous. One spark, even from a light switch can cause it to go kaboom causing a lot of damage to people or property. A recent explosion from a extraction company in Colorado fortunately did not cause any injuries, but the employees were in complete shock.
The reasons open blasting is dangerous has to do with butane being released into a pipe or tube filled with weed. The butane soaks the marijuana forcing a gooey THC liquid out the other end. The liquid is typically placed over low heat causing the butane to evaporate.
Unfortunately, many commercial medical and recreational marijuana businesses in Colorado are still using this method, which happens to be illegal according to the Denver Fire Department.
